How to Volunteer

Good sitting dog

The Shelter is always seeking people who want to make a difference for the animals in our community through volunteer service. Our volunteers are heroes to the many animals who arrive at the Shelter each year. You can make a difference in many ways. You may wish to work directly with the animals, on community events, or in Shelter operations.

Each and every volunteer position directly affects the lives of all our shelter animals. Once you have volunteered, your heart will never be the same!

If you’re interested in a volunteer position please complete the following steps:

1. Click here to complete the Volunteer Profile

2. Read the Volunteer Handbook

A copy will be emailed to you once you complete the profile or you can get a hard copy from the Animal Shelter. After completing the profile and reading the handbook please attend orientation where you will learn all about the fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities the Shelter has to offer.

3. Check out our general Volunteer Opportunities

Group Volunteer Activities and Tours

If you have a group that would like a tour, field trip, or to complete a one-time project, please contact the Shelter at 208-788-4351. A minimum of one week advance notice or more is usually required to schedule a group. We try to accommodate groups of any size. Be advised that, because of safety issues with our pets and your group, there may be little to no interaction with animals for large scale group projects.

Mandatory Community Service

We require all court-appointed community service volunteers to contact the Shelter prior to beginning their service hours. Community Service Volunteers must set up their schedule prior to coming in for their first shift.
