Public Relations Internship Available at Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley

A public relations internship for a college student will be available this winter at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley.

Duties will include writing and distributing press releases, developing marketing materials and assisting with fund-raising events.

The intern will work under the direction of the shelter’s outside public relations agency, Jo Murray Public Relations.

Although the intern will not be paid, the agency is willing to help arrange for college credit at schools where this is an option. Because it can be financially difficult for a student to accept an unpaid internship in the Wood River Valley, a member of the shelter’s board of directors has offered to help an intern find a part-time paid position and subsidized housing.

Additional information and detailed directions for applicants are available on the Internet at www.JoMurray.com/PublicRelationsIntern.pdf.

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, the first “no kill” shelter in Idaho, promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless animals, adopting them to qualified homes and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. More than 90 percent of its funding comes from private donations.

In 2009 more than 1,500 animals received services from the shelter. This includes 350 animals that were adopted, 252 lost animals that were reunited with their owners, 255 shelter animals spayed/neutered, and 387 privately owned animals that were spayed or neutered at no cost to their owners. On an average day, the shelter cares for 45 dogs and 45 cats.

Internship description

Public relations assistant. Primary duties will involve writing and placing press releases with local and national media, preparing marketing materials and assisting with fund-raising events for the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley. The intern will work under the supervision of Jo Murray Public Relations, an outside public relations agency that assists the shelter on a pro bono basis. Opportunities to work on the agency’s other nonprofit and paid accounts may be available if the intern desires and time permits. If an occasion should arise for the intern to do any work for which the agency is paid, the intern will be paid accordingly.

Requirements: Must have completed a basic newswriting course, have strong knowledge of grammar and spelling, and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Facebook and Twitter. Resume, writing samples and faculty reference required. May not be allergic to dogs or cats. E-mail letter of application and other materials to jo@jomurray.com. Please include dates that you are available.

Preference will be given to someone who can be in the Hailey/Sun Valley area all or part of the time. Spending part of the winter holiday break here in order to become familiar with the organization is an option. Because we realize that most students will require financial assistance to accept an unpaid internship in the Wood River Valley, a board member will assist the intern in finding a part-time paid position (most likely in retail or food service) and subsidized room and board.
